How to Care for Your Radiator In the Summer Heat

Last updated 11 months ago

When properly maintained, your car’s radiator should last eight to ten years without needing to be repaired or replaced. Summer can be particularly difficult on your car’s radiator, so it’s important to care for it by going to your local car repair shop and requesting the following three services.

  • Top Off Your Coolant The most important thing to do to prepare your radiator for the heat of summer is to ensure your coolant levels are adequate. Your car’s coolant may leak out if your engine overheats. Unfortunately, when your car doesn’t have enough coolant, your radiator and engine are liable to overheat even more. Avoid the deadly cycle by staying on top of your car’s fluid levels.

  • Coolant System Flush Sometimes topping off your car’s level of coolant isn’t enough. This is especially true if the water and antifreeze in your car’s coolant system are unable to flow efficiently, if your coolant is green or red in color, or if it’s been more than two years since your coolant system has been drained and replenished.

  • Radiator Inspection If your levels of coolant are consistently low, be sure to get your radiator inspected this summer, because there could be a leak or a crack in your coolant system or radiator. While you are getting your radiator inspected, mechanics at your local repair shop will also look for other problems like rusty hose clamps, thermostat problems, corrosion, ineffective fans, engine oil levels, and other problems that can cause your radiator to fail or your engine to overheat.
